Celestine

I am a widow and mother of seven children. I was born at Bukavu in 1960 and got married in 1974. I lived in harmony with my husband. He was successful and rich. My children and I were happy, we had clothes and a car.

Unfortunately however, my husband began to look for other wives. He came home late at night. When I recognised what was going on, I warned him. I advised him to stop taking other wives but he refused to listen to me.

One day, one of my children was ill and he was hospitalised here in Kinshasa. After seeing him, the doctor said the child needed blood and my husband, donated some of his blood to our child. Our child fell ill and died. We went to find out why he had died and the doctor told us the child had died from AIDS. My husband was deeply affected. He had become infected with HIV by his second wife. He died a short time later. His family rejected me and no longer helped me look after the children.

With money from my husband’s last salary I began to sell fish at the market but when this was not enough, I turned to FFP for help. I am afraid of getting thinner and of getting skin infections.

Through my photos I want to show the reality of HIV/ Aids and try to enourage others to be careful.
